Kateřina Komm, Vierge à l'Enfant, 2024, bronze version, 13 x 12 x 25 cm
The small bronze sculpture draws loose inspiration from the French sculpture The Virgin in Ivory. The traditional Christian iconography of Mary and the little Jesus serves as a reference to both the joy and suffering of motherhood. The front side retains a conventional sculptural form, while the reverse features a text: a diary entry of the artist, written on the day of her childbirth.

The Christological motive centres on the detail of Christ's feet, evoking the Crucifixion. However, there are no visible traces of violence; there are no nails or blood. The feet seem to hover above a small wooden plinth, resembling a small tomb. The tomb, representing death, is dwindling, while Christ's body is enlarged, suggesting growth. This visual dynamic appears to prefigure the Resurrection, a miracle that will give rise to new hope and a new Church.
